He had to overcome obstacles such as a limited campaign for the pandemic and contract COVID-19 He will face great economic and health challenges that force him to seek national unity
- In his second consecutive attempt, Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona managed to win the presidency of the Republic in the first electoral round of yesterday’s elections. The politician, born in the home of a long-standing leader, consummated the victory envisioned by the most recognized polls and brings to power the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) , formed in 2014 with the departure of a majority of leaders and militants of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), and based on the Dominican Social Alliance (ASD) maintained by his father José Rafael Abinader.
Abinader comes to the Executive Branch at a difficult time for the country’s economy and health, which is experiencing a significant increase in COVID-19 infections and hospitals and clinics are filled with patients suffering from the virus. Along with the other candidates, he had to go through an unprecedented electoral campaign that has changed since the municipal elections of February 16 were thwarted by the collapse of automated voting.
At the beginning of the pandemic, he was confined to his home after the municipal elections of March 15 in which his party won the main squares, then he deployed a “Solidarity Route” in which he toured the country delivering food and which led him to become one more victim of COVID-19 taking it out of circulation in the last three weeks of proselytizing, creating many conjectures about the final destination of his candidacy.
Everything indicates that all these obstacles became impulses in his favor.
Many sectors bet that the country will be confined again and will return to the curfew in common agreement between the elected and current authorities.
He is an economist and his experience in the State was held by the Council of the Dominican Corporation of State Electric Companies (CDEEE) in the Government of former President Hipólito Mejía.Abinader supporters celebrate at the campaign command. ( )
Important challenges await the president-elect due to the hard blow suffered by production and the thousands of jobs that have been lost and are not recovered due to the closure of the economy in the last 3 months of confinement and pandemic.
His economic team has stated that due to the injury suffered by the productive sectors they will have to go to the credit of international organizations to seek a relaunch of the economy at the end of the year.
Going forward, Abinader must have the sagacity to unify all sectors of the country around a recovery agenda, but prior to this, measures will have to be taken and great efforts made to stop and reduce the wave of coronavirus infections, which it has exploded in recent weeks after the opening phases of the economy
His political beginnings
Abinader’s presidential project comes from 12 years of political work that was based on and started his candidacy for Senator from Santo Domingo province in 2005.
