US President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of all travel from European countries to the United States with the exception of the United Kingdom to prevent the spread of the coronavirus .
The suspension will take effect at midnight on Friday and will last at least 30 days , as detailed by Trump in a televised message to the nation from the Oval Office.
“I have decided to take several strong but necessary measures to protect the health and well – being of all Americans. To prevent new cases from entering our borders, we will suspend all travel from Europe to the United States,” Trump has said.
The US president has explained that the announced ban seeks to close the entrance to “anything” that comes from Europe, including merchandise and commerce.
” These restrictions will be adjusted according to conditions on the ground,” said the president, explaining that exceptions will be made for Americans who want to return from Europe and undergo rigorous testing for the virus .
Trump has branded COVID-19 a “foreign virus” and has blamed European countries for part of its spread in the United States.
“The European Union did not take the same precautions (as the US) and did not restrict travel from China and other sources (of the virus). As a consequence, a large number of new cases in the US were caused by travelers coming from Europe, “he said.
The US leader has also announced during his speech that due to the decrease in new cases in China and South Korea, his government will “reevaluate” the travel restrictions imposed
on those countries.
“We are at a critical moment in the fight against the virus . We took a step that saved lives with early action in China, now we must take the same action with Europe,” said Trump.
During his speech, Trump has not specified which countries are included in the measure or who it affects. Thus, later, the White House has specified that travel restrictions apply “to foreigners who have been in the 26 countries that have open border agreements in the last 14 days,” referring to the Schengen Area , according to a published message. on the social network Twitter.
